Diving stops have become commonplace now, which for some reason takes me back to our days when diving was restricted to the swimming pool. With the nature of the outfields being what they were, we could ill afford to dive, any such attempt was likely to be the last slice of action on a cricket ground, with the guarantee of injuries ranging from flaky shin to broken bones... When I say we couldn't afford to dive those days, I do mean it literally, too. On our first few tours to England, our daily allowance was two pound sterling, and that included what we spent on laundry as well. A dive translated to a green patch on our trousers, and a spell in the washing machine. That also meant going without one, sometimes two meals.
